I too grew up over a highway in the Bronx, and read all the Little House books (possibly over a single summer between 2nd and 3rd grades { I was a well advanced reader and my teacher didn’t believe me}), but never harbored a fantasy about butter-making. Maple syrup candy making, yes!
Back when I was able to buy non-homogenized milk at the supermarket, I would skim off the cream and keep it in the freezer until I had enough to make butter. I used my Cuisinart. Unfortunately, I can’t get that kind of milk anymore.
